What to stock before a gas compressor overhaul
A parts checklist for a planned reciprocating compressor overhaul, and which of those items are worth keeping on the shelf between jobs.
The categories a planned overhaul usually touches
Across the Ariel line items GenCom supplies in Pakistan, planned overhaul orders cluster into a predictable set of categories. Not every job needs all of them, but a scope that ignores one of them tends to produce a second, urgent order halfway through the outage.
- Valves, seats and guards — suction and discharge valves, valve seats, guard assemblies, plates, retainers and unloader equipped valves
- Pistons, rods and rings — piston rings, rider or wear bands, guide rings, piston rods, collars and nuts
- Sealing — packing sets, O rings, spiral wound and steel gaskets, back up rings
- Overhaul and rebuild kits — cylinder rebuild kits, valve rebuild kits and complete overhaul kits, which bundle the small parts you would otherwise miss
- Bearings and bushings — main and thrust bearings, bushings
- Lubrication — lube oil pumps, force feed lubricators, filter elements, drive chains and sprockets
The exact parts depend on the frame, the cylinder class and the service. That is a conversation with the OEM data, not a generic list, and it is what our team confirms before quoting.
Which items are worth holding between overhauls
Not every part deserves shelf space. The ones that usually do share two traits: the machine consumes them whether or not you have ordered, and their absence stops a job.
Consumables are the clearest case. Lube oil filter elements are consumed continuously by a running compressor, so a stock out is a matter of time rather than luck.
Small sealing items are the second case. A gasket or an O ring is a low value item that can hold up a reassembled cylinder for weeks if it is the one thing missing.
Conversely, large or frame specific items are usually better ordered against a scheduled job than held speculatively, because they tie up capital and may not match the next machine.
Order the whole scope in one consignment where you can
On a two stage machine, ordering every valve position together rather than piecemeal is what avoids a second shipment mid outage. A recent overhaul package for the ENCOP-3 compressor at Engro's Daharki plant covered first and second stage suction and discharge valves, repair kits, retainer gaskets and springs in a single consignment, delivered inside the agreed lead time.
Where the full scope cannot wait for the slowest item, a deliberate part shipment is better than a delayed one. Tell us which items sit on the critical path and they can travel first.

- Compressor frame and serial number if available
- Cylinder classes and the number of throws
- Scope of the outage and the dates
- Anything replaced at the last overhaul, which usually predicts this one
